The 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards winners are here! Over the course of the last year, we (that means us, Aidan and Elan) have been making spreadsheets, verifying nominations, coding, social-media-ing, and bringing together a large and diverse jury, and it's hard to believe that we're already announcing our finalists.

We saw 530 individual blogs nominated across 26 categories, which makes it our biggest year yet. Our 34 volunteer jurors worked hard over the course of this November and December using our ten criteria to judge each of the blogs in both the first and second rounds to arrive at our winners. This jury has worked hard to bring you our narrowing set of finalists in both rounds — each of them read and critiqued between 60 and 75 blogs altogether — and I wish I could explain the level of gratitude we have for their hard work. Without these volunteer jurors, the 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards would not be possible, and it was an honour to work with them.

And now, because putting this off any further is just mean, we are thrilled to announce the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in the 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards!

Here Is the 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards Top 5 Nominees Shortlist!
All of the 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards Nominees Have Been Processed and Our Jury's Hard At WorkElan MorganFri, 28 Nov 2014 20:07:19 +0000http://www.canblogawards.com/blog/2014/11/28/all-the-nominees-have-been-processed-and-our-jurys-hard-at-work5116b212e4b0b8b2ffe3fe42:5407f088e4b085e37b016c70:5478d1e3e4b05a09c6570f61

There were hundreds more nominations this year than in any of our previous four years, which makes this 5th year of the Canadian Weblog Awards our biggest ever. We had 766 nominations in total. SEVEN HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SIX. After weeding out the duplicates, there are a grand total of 530 nominees across 25 categories in the 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards. Go, Canada!

We finally finished processing all of the nominations two days ago, and our 38 jurors are now hard at work judging each of the blogs against our 10 criteria in the first of two rounds to discover the top five nominees in each category. The Top Fives will be announced here on December 5th.

We are still rolling out announcements of nominees on Twitter, so if your favourite blog hasn't been announced yet, hang on.

After the Top Fives are announced, our jury will score each of the Top Fives within their categories using the same 10 criteria to find the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd best blogs in Canada in each category. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be announced on December 15th.

Thank you to everyone who nominated blogs for the 5th season of the Canadian Weblog Awards, and thanks especially to our incredible jurors, who are volunteering their time and energy to critically judge approximately 40 weblogs each in this first round. Without them, we would not be here.

See you all again on the December 5th!

It's not traffic numbers that matter here; we love great writing and great design. In order to do show off our best and brightest, though, we need volunteer jurors to help us surface the best Canadian blogs, and that means you! Do you want to help celebrate the best in Canadian blogging? Do you believe in quality, both in content and design? Do you want to put your judgement to good use? Then you probably need to join us. We take Canadians and non-Canadians alike, so there's no need to let your position on the globe get in the way.

We take Canadians and non-Canadians alike, so there's no need to let your position on the globe get in the way.

Fill out the form below to become a juror in the 5th annual Canadian Weblog Awards! We would love to have you.

READ THIS BEFORE FILLING OUT
THE JUROR APPLICATION FORM BELOW:

So, you want to be a weblog awards juror! You've come to the right place, because the 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards is accepting volunteer jury member applications until November 12, 2014.

If you are selected as a juror, your duties will be asked to:

 • critically and fairly judge approximately 50 weblogs against a simple set of 10 criteria between November 15th and November 28th: http://www.canadianweblogawards.com/criteria/. The scores will be used to reveal the top five semi-finalists in each category.
 • judge the five semi-finalists against the same set of 10 criteria between December 1st and December 12th, the scores from which the final top three weblogs in each category will be ranked in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
 • work with fellow jurors to choose and rank the top three in categories in which ties for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place present themselves.
 • have your bio displayed on the Canadian Weblog Awards website following the announcement of finalists on December 15, 2014. For example: http://www.canadianweblogawards.com/2013-jurors.
 • disclose any and all possible conflicts of interest with regard to the weblogs you are asked to judge, such as your being directly or indirectly involved with any of the said weblogs.
 • keep confidential your position as a juror as well as any information regarding the nominated weblogs and the judging process during its proceedings. If a juror breaks this confidentiality offline or online before December 15, 2014, said juror will be relieved of their duties, and the weblogs under their purview will be scored again by an impartial juror.

By filling out and submitting this form, you agree to complete the above listed duties as a juror in the 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards, should you be selected. If you are selected, you will receive your acceptance e-mail on or before November 15, 2014. Only accepted jurors will be contacted.

Thanks for your application!

You have three weeks left to nominate Canadian blogs for the 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards!

A few of our categories are short on nominees, but it's not for a lack of blogs out there, so if you know of good blogs that would fit into the following categories, get in there and nominate them:

 • Activism & Social Justice
 • Agriculture & Nature (this includes gardening and farming)
 • Education
 • Fashion
 • French Language
 • Green Living
 • Group Weblog
 • Placeblog
 • Sports & Recreation

We are busy entering new nominations — we still have 500 of them waiting in queue — so our present public list of nominees is by no means comprehensive, but check out this year's nominees listed so far.

And don't forget to honour your favourite Canadian blogs with a nomination in the 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards!

We realized needed a Product Review Blogs category!

We talked over concerns about introducing a new category part way into the nominations period, but we have decided that it does a greater disservice to shoehorn those blogs into less suitable categories that aren't actually true fits. We are taking the liberty of adding previously nominated blogs that are a good fit for this category, and, going forward, the Product Review Blogs category will be an option in our nomination form.

The Product Review Blogs category is for those blogs that are primarily made up of product reviews, both sponsored and not, of all kinds of products from baby carriers to iPhone apps.

As an avid blogger and marketing student, I was excited to serve as a Canadian Weblog Awards juror. I knew I could be of help and figured I'd pick up a couple of tips along the way. What I didn't know is how much the judging process would teach me about building an effective blog.

The 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards Nominations Are OpenElan MorganWed, 01 Jan 2014 08:13:22 +0000http://www.canblogawards.com/blog/2014/1/1/the-2014-canadian-weblog-awards-nominations-are-open.html5116b212e4b0b8b2ffe3fe42:5407f088e4b085e37b016c70:5407f088e4b085e37b016ee4 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards

Happy New Year!

As we usher in 2014, we also usher in the new season of the Canadian Weblog Awards. It is our fifth season already. Our FIFTH. It feels like our baby is growing up so fast. Sniff.

We have made a few category changes, as we do every year both to reflect our changing times and to better show off our Canadian talents. This year, we have narrowed down the number of categories from 34 to 25. The consolidation and removal of extraneous categories will make for less ambiguity and category crossover, and it will also mean tighter competition. Whee!

Take a look at our new list of blog categories here. And the best part of starting our new 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards season?

Nominations open today.

You can nominate your favourite Canadian weblogs starting right now using our simplified nomination form, and we will keep a running blogroll of nominees and a public Twitter list so that you can keep up with them throughout the year. Also, remember that this is a competition decided by jury with no public vote, so a blog need only be nominated once for an equal chance to place at the end of the year.

Thank you so much to everyone who has seen us through our first four years so that we can open up this exciting fifth season. We are thrilled to be here and cannot wait to showcase all the great Canadian blogging that is going on.

Now, go nominate the best in Canada!

The Canadian Weblog Awards are decided by jury rather than public vote so that we can focus on quality over popularity. Each blog is measured against 10 criteria with an eye to both content and design so that we can find Canadian blogs exhibiting the highest excellence, and this process of adjudication makes our volunteer jury vital to these awards. We had 492 blogs to judge this year, and our 34 jurors did an incredible job taking a critical eye to each and every one to find our 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards winners.

I am so honoured that they volunteered to spend two weeks of their lives to make these awards a reality, and I am proud to introduce them to you. They are a dedicated group of individuals, and, if I could, I'd send them all to some beach resort for umbrella drinks.

Thank you, 2013 jurors, for allowing us to honour Canada's best! You make our world go 'round.]]>

The 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards winners are here!

Over the past year, the 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards saw 492 weblogs nominated across 34 categories. Our 34 volunteer jurors worked hard over the course of this November and December using our 10 criteria to judge each of the 492 weblogs in the first round and each of the approximately 170 weblogs in the second round to arrive at our winners.

Each of our jurors stepped forward to volunteer hours of their time and energy to make these awards possible. We quite simply could not exist without them and their dedication to fostering quality in the Canadian blogging community. All of this is thanks to them, and I am honoured by their involvement. Thank you!

And now it's time! We are excited to announce the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in the 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards!

See you back here on December 7th when we announce the 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners!

Another Small Change to the 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards ScheduleElan MorganTue, 12 Nov 2013 01:01:09 +0000http://www.canblogawards.com/blog/2013/11/11/another-small-change-to-the-2013-canadian-weblog-awards-sche.html5116b212e4b0b8b2ffe3fe42:5407f088e4b085e37b016c70:5407f088e4b085e37b016ebc2013 Canadian Weblog AwardsRemember our last entry when I explained that we had technical difficulties that had slowed us down? Well, that was before we had a computer hard drive fry itself.

The good news is that we have recovered our files and replaced the computer! The bad news is that we are delayed a little bit again. The new revised schedule for the 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards is as follows:
December 1:
Announcement of the top five blogs in each category

December 7:
Announcement of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards winners
In the meantime, we are powering through the last of the nominations and will have the list of 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards nominees completed by November 19th.

These awards have suffered a few technical difficulties this year, but I can only assume that these will be exceeded by their greatness.]]>

Due to time and technical constraints, processing nominees in this year's awards is taking a little longer than usual. As a result, the announcement of the nominees shortlist of the top five in each category will happen on November 21st instead of the 15th. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards winners will still be announced on December 1st as originally planned.

Thank you for your patience.

I sent out the first email to our set of 39 jurors today, and with that the excitement is starting to build over here. Aidan and I can't wait get this show on the road!]]>

Canada's Feminist Bloggers Get a Nod From Ms. MagazineElan MorganThu, 13 Jun 2013 16:11:28 +0000http://www.canblogawards.com/blog/2013/6/13/canadas-feminist-bloggers-get-a-nod-from-ms-magazine.html5116b212e4b0b8b2ffe3fe42:5407f088e4b085e37b016c70:5407f088e4b085e37b016eb6Several Canadian feminist bloggers are profiled in a recent Ms. Magazine blog article, "The Femisphere: Bloggers From Canada".

Anupreet Sandhu Bhamra, Chelsea Vowel, Annie Urban, and Marianne Prairie are given a well-deserved spotlight, and we're thrilled to show them off:
Women, Action and the Media (WAM!) recently released "Exploring the Canadian Feminist Blogosphere," informed by research conducted on behalf of WAM! Vancouver. The report delves into the distinction between blogs that explicitly identify as feminist and those that come from a feminist sensibility. While it paints an interesting picture of the developing feminist blogosphere in Canada, it doesn't offer feedback from or dialogue between the blogs/bloggers themselves: so that's where The Femisphere steps in!
Ms. also mentions a number of other notable Canucks — Absolute Equality , Gender Focus , Kick Action, Kwe Today, Le Mauvais Genre, Les Furies, One Life Glory, Stay at Home Feminist , Vendetta Grrrl, Womanist Musings — so make sure to check them all out.

Thanks for the shout out, Ms.!]]>
Meet the 2012 Canadian Weblog Awards JurorsElan MorganFri, 08 Feb 2013 21:34:05 +0000http://www.canblogawards.com/blog/2013/2/8/meet-the-2012-canadian-weblog-awards-jurors.html5116b212e4b0b8b2ffe3fe42:5407f088e4b085e37b016c70:5407f088e4b085e37b016eaf2013 Canadian Weblog AwardsAre you wondering what makes the Ninjamatics' Canadian Weblog Awards tick? As awards that are ruled by jury rather than popular vote, it's our jurors that make these awards possible.

Every year, our jury is made up entirely of volunteers from all over the world, and this year was no exception. This year, we had 51 jurors from not only Canada but also places like the United States, England, and Australia, and they each put in hours of work over the month of January through two rounds of adjudication, narrowing down 461 blogs to find our 2012 winners. I am so proud of the work they do, and I am thrilled to introduce you to some of them (we're still adding bios). Click through to meet some of our esteemed Ninjamatics' 2012 Canadian Weblog Awards jury:

To all of our jury members, you have our deep gratitude. Thank you so much for all you do, and thank you for making these awards what they are!

Nominations for the Ninjamatics' 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards Are Open!Elan MorganTue, 05 Feb 2013 21:03:07 +0000http://www.canblogawards.com/blog/2013/2/5/nominations-for-the-ninjamatics-2013-canadian-weblog-awards.html5116b212e4b0b8b2ffe3fe42:5407f088e4b085e37b016c70:5407f088e4b085e37b016eab2013 Canadian Weblog AwardsThe Ninjamatics' 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards nomination form is now live!

We will gather nominations throughout the year from now until October 31, 2013, and each nominated blog will be added to our growing 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards nominees blogroll as they are nominated. The weblogs will be adjudicated by a volunteer jury through two rounds during the month of November, and the winners of the Ninjamatics' 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards will be announced on December 1, 2013.

As we do every year to better accommodate our nominees, we have made a number of changes to the categories for this year's awards. New categories and those with changed names are in bold.
 • Art & Photography and Crafting have been combined to create Art, Crafting & Photography.
 • The Best Designed and Best Written categories have been removed. These categories will be nominated by our volunteer jurors during adjudication of the nominated blogs.
 • Best New Weblog has been removed, because, by the time the awards are announced, some of the nominated weblogs are already well over a year old.
 • We have added a brand new category called Finance for all things both home and business finance, including couponing.
 • We have added another brand new category called Green Living for those blogs about living ecologically mindful lives.
 • Nature & Gardening has become Gardening, and Science, Technology & the Internet has become Technology & the Internet, and the leftover Nature and Science have been combined to create Science & Nature.
 • Pop Culture & Entertainment has been absorbed by Arts & Culture.
So, check out our full list of categories and head on over to our Ninjamatics' 2013 Canadian Weblog Awards nomination form to nominate great Canadian blogs for our new 2013 awards season!]]>

The Ninjamatics' 2012 Canadian Weblog Awards winners are here!

Over the past year, the Ninjamatics' 2012 Canadian Weblog Awards saw 467 weblogs nominated across 36 categories. Our 51 volunteer jurors worked hard over the course of this January using our ten criteria to judge each of the 467 weblogs in the first round and each of the approximately 180 weblogs in the second round to arrive at our winners. Our jurors have been an incredible group to work with, and I wish I could adequately express the level of my gratitude, because they are what really make these Awards possible as a tool to promote weblogs of quality across Canada.

And now, without further ado, we are thrilled to announce the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in the Ninjamatics' 2012 Canadian Weblog Awards!
